When I first found out that I had scoliosis and had to wear a brace, I was worried about how it would impact on my daily life. However, over time I have found that there can be some positives to wearing a brace, it’s just important to try new things and learn as you go! Therefore, I wanted to share 8 important things that I have learnt since being in my brace.
Everyone says that I look taller!
My posture has improved
When in the brace, I no longer have uneven shoulders and have a great posture, which is definitely a confidence boost.
Say YES to strapless tops and dresses!
I simply turn my body sock into a strapless singlet and can wear any strapless piece of clothing with ease!
You will find that different challenges will present themselves. For example, I noticed that the brace does often poke a few holes in my clothing, however I have conquered this problem by putting round sticky patches over the screws. (Ask your brace clinician or try a craft/hardware store)
Create a comfortable environment
Cover and surround yourself with as many pillows and blankets as you can when you’re sleeping or relaxing so that you’re comfortable.
Sleep with only one pillow
When sleeping, I make sure I only use one pillow so that there is the least amount of curve in my back. This relieves the pressure of the brace on my back when I’m lying down.
At times, I will take the brace off in my sleep! To stop this from happening, I safety pin the straps down and problem solved!
Don’t be afraid to wear nice clothes
Your brace is easy to hide with a cute knit and jeggings in the winter, and a printed, loose top with shorts in the summer! High waisted shorts or skirts can still be worn under or over the brace. Sometimes seams can cause imprints so ensure you choose shorts with thin material.
